Volunteer Tutor Training 

Before volunteers begin tutoring, they must attend a National Pre-Service Training and a Regional Program Orientation. Throughout the semester, volunteers also participate in Tutor Development Training focused on tutoring skills and practice.  

National Pre-Service Training

During National Pre-Service Training, volunteers learn how to be effective and ethical tutors across all tutoring settings. We prepare volunteers for in person and virtual tutoring as well as tutoring in carceral facilities and reentry settings. Training focuses on the context and practice of tutoring, including discussions about the carceral state, reentry, tutoring strategies, ethical volunteerism, trauma-informed practice, and intentional engagement. Regional program Orientation

In addition to National Pre-Service Training, volunteers are required to attend a Regional Program Orientation prior to the first day of tutoring. In Regional Program Orientations, volunteers learn about region-specific program information, including regional program partnerships, expectations for tutoring during the semester, and technology tools or platforms for tutoring in their region. Additionally, volunteers have the opportunity to meet fellow tutors in the region and become familiar with the PGP’s semester calendar.

Tutor Development Training 

Throughout the tutoring semester, the PGP provides Tutor Development Training focused on enhancing volunteers’ tutoring practice and supporting high-quality tutoring. This includes tutoring strategies and how to tutor specific subjects, content, or skills.
